June 2011
June 8th-18th
What a great spring of fishing for huge and beautiful rainbows!!! The first two weeks was the Downing/Pope party of die hard anglers who reveled in the power of the spring rainbow trout. Four of our guests who are also steelhead fisherman were able to take their spey rods out and swing leaches for titans while also taking breaks with single handed rods to fish with dry flies and flesh flies. One of our guests, Dylan Herrera, who is 12 years old, was able to grow from a rookie flyfisherman to a serious trout slayer catching a 27 inch rainbow trout.
June 13th-19th
Our second week a husband and wife team joined the happy lodge and added on a love of fishing that was phenomenal. Having a strong passion for Alaska and big rainbows fueled their fire to catch a 28 inch spring rainbow trout and many more exceeding two feet in length.
June 20th-25th
Our third week we had a group who loved to fish and to also eco tour and see wild Alaska. One guest wrote in our guest book: “You guys are greater than great. Thank you for an unforgettable experience we’ll never forget, great service and very accommodating for a very relaxing vacation.” From gourmet food to seeing a beautiful brown bear to fishing for huge rainbows, grayling, and dolly varden, these guests were sad to leave and are returning for 2012.
One serious angler was able to catch rainbows well over 20 inches with dry flies and also caught huge rainbows with mouse patterns. He wrote: “My goals have been met. I’ve learned spey casting, double hauls, stack mends, and other techniques. The hosts have been unbelievable: meals, lodging, guides, safety, and care.”
June 27th-July 2nd
The last week of June was unbelievable with the exciting flurries of movement and the knowledge that the sockeye are coming in! The real excitement was, however, the huge amounts of trophy rainbow trout that were caught this week. From creek fishing to slaying rainbows in the tributaries close to the lodge our guests were also able to flyfish for yardstick northern pike. One of our guests wrote: “What a trip. Best ever since I started in Alaska 16 years ago. Mark and Brad have the best lodge I have ever been to. So many big fish in the rivers, many from 24 to 26 inches. Good on dry flies as well as leeches. Slam is the best chef anywhere. Exhausted, happy, sad to leave.”
