Sept 16, 2010 Fishing update

Hey all, I spoke with my partner Brad today. We have a group of five fishing with us this week and they are into some serious rainbow fishing. We are fishing a number of areas but one river in particular is really on fire. An iliamna tributary of course. There are still salmon in this stream but many stretches of this river are thin with salmon and rich with rainbows. The water is up but clear. Of course egg patterns are working but flesh flies have been awesome too. Also articulated streamers are producing in the tail outs. Sculpin patterns in green and anything big and black. The takes are thunderous. The fish are heavy. They have gained over 30% of their body weight at this point. Most fish being caught are from twenty one to twenty seven inches. Rainbows from 28-31 inches have been caught this week. Some larger trout have been hooked and snapped off as well. The fish from 21-27 inches are weighing 4-8 pounds on average. The fish from 28-31 are going 9-11 pounds on average. The larger fish are like steelhead going over twelve pounds or more. We have the river to ourselves and the weather has been really nice this week due to a high pressure system stuck in our area. We have some pretty fall foliage going on to boot. The guests are landing 60-70 rainbows a day without fishing a great deal of water. Needless to say some happy anglers. This is what it’s all about. In a couple of weeks we will talk about next spring and what will happen due to this record run of salmon. But first lets finish the season. I will have a follow up report next week on the group fishing with us now and we still have on more group joining us next week. We would love to fish early October this year but don’t have anyone to take on the rivers. It would be purely a trophy trout week looking for rainbows from 28-33 inches and 9-14 pounds.
